About

Despite what one might think, Locust Point does NOT get its name from the cicadas that emerge from the ground en masse every 17 years.  Rather, this South Baltimore neighborhood got its current name in 1846 for the locust trees growing on the peninsula.   Formally known as Whetstone Point, when the Maryland Colonial Assembly established it as a port of entry 1706, Locust Point was once just a pasture where Fort McHenry stood to protect the Port of Baltimore after America won its independence.

As one might imagine by being surrounded by water on 3 sides, Locust point was once home to dock workers and their families that worked the dry-docks, warehouses, rail yards and factories to support our nation’s ever expanding trade industry.  In fact, over the years, Locust point has been attractive to many commercial operations and is still home to a Domino Sugar refinery and the world headquarters of Under Armour.

And while its roots were industrial, Locust Point has evolved as other “popular Baltimore neighborhoods – to become one of Baltimore’s desired places to live. With the Silo Point condo complex, apartments at McHenry Row, and ample inventory of new and remodeled homes, homes for sale in Locust Point has something for everyone.  Add neighborhood amenities that include the Locust Point Dog Park, Latrobe Park, the McHenry Row Shopping Center, the Locust Point Recreation Center, ample local bars and restaurants, the free water taxi service to Fells Point, and of course, for you History Buffs, Fort McHenry and you have a created an environment where you never have to leave the peninsula.  If this were not enough for your you can cool off with a sweet treat “Miss Twist,” who drives her turquoise ice-cream truck around the neighborhood delivering sweet treats.
